Chief Justice Roberts on SCOTUS attending the State of the Union: “I’m not sure why we’re there.”

Dude. Yes.

Roberts:

The image of having the members of one branch of government standing up, literally surrounding the Supreme Court, cheering and hollering while the court — according the requirements of protocol — has to sit there expressionless, I think is very troubling.

His final word on the issue:

To the extent it has degenerated into a political pep rally, I’m not sure why we’re there.

I don’t imagine he or Alito will be there next year. They’ll likely be joining Scalia and Thomas, who already skip it.
