Hey, you know what would be nice? If politicians only slept with their spouses. I mean, I know that’s a lot to ask, but that’d be fantastic.
From Fox News:
Rep. Mark Souder to Resign Amid Affair with Staffer
FOX has learned that eight-term Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN) will announce his resignation today after it came to light that he was conducting an affair with a female staffer who worked in his district office.
Multiple senior House sources indicated that the extent of the affair would have landed Souder before the House Ethics Committee.
Elected as a family values conservative as part of the Republican revolution in 1994, Souder survived a tough re-election challenge in 2008 and survived a contested primary two weeks ago.
Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels now has the responsibility to call a special election, and according to Politico’s Josh Kraushaar, “GOP sources say it’ll likely be in November.”
Dave Weigel tweets: “Indiana GOP sources tell me they can replace Souder on the ballot at the June 18/19 state convention.”
The runner-up to Souder in the primary was Bob Thomas, a car dealer who garnered 34% of the vote to Souder’s 48%. Not too shabby. He may be the GOP’s pick at the convention.
Or, as Allahpundit notes, it could be Marlin Stutzman, the rising Conservative star who came in second (with 30% of the vote) to Dan Coats in the recent Senate primary.
Also, for those of you wondering if Souder’s seat might be ripe for a Democratic takeover, think again. Indiana’s 3rd is a R+14 district according to Cook’s PVI. It’s not going over to the Dem column any time soon.
Finally, here is Souder’s resignation statement if you’re interested. Before asking the media to respect his privacy in this “difficult” time, Souder closed with this:
As I leave public office, my plans are focused upon repairing my marriage, earning back the trust of my family and my community, and renewing my walk with my Lord.
Renewing his walk with the Lord will be the easy part. God is a loving God, and always forgives. Regaining the trust of his family and community will be the harder task. All the best to Mr. Souder in that endeavor.
